Filtration is important because it removes contaminants that can promote the growth of bacteria and algae, also removing particles that can make the water cloudy. When we are asked, “Why does my water look off?” or “Why isn’t my water crystal clear?” a dirty filter is often the issue. We tend to see three different types of filters at the pools we service.

Sand Filters

It’s the oldest form of pool filtration. Uses Silica Sands as the filter media and should have the sand changed every 3-5 years or after a green pool service.

Cartridge Filters

Newest form of pool filtration. The filter media is spun-bonded polyester or treated paper and will filter down to 10-25 microns. Cartridge filter elements are considered replaceable. We recommend filter cleanings once every 2-3 months and filter replacement yearly.

Diatomaceous Earth (D.E.)

D.E. removes the smallest particle size of any pool/spa filtration device. Tiny fossilized skeletons of sea plankton are used to trap undissolved material. The filter range is typically between 2-6 microns (a grain of table salt is 100 microns). We recommend cleaning your D.E. filter every 6-8 weeks.
